Front Porch Cat Haley

This is a pen and ink that I did of one of my cats Haley who has long passed over the rainbow bridge. I found this old picture of her on the front porch and loved the shadows.

I was happy to here some one bought her at Peterson's and she has a new home.

This is a watercolor I have never posted. I have have had it at Petersons and must have slipped my mind to post. How easy that can happen. I know I have been gone a while but I was in B'ham. for a while as Dad pased away in Oct. For some reason I guess I have not been to keen to get back to my painting but hope to as the smell of the oil paint is calling again.

Gin Gin in the sun oil 8x10

Well I posted a few earlier cat paintings I did and now I'll put up a current one. I don't know what happened to me but this is the third try at this painting. The first went in the trash pile the second is unfinished and I am still not real happy with this one. Maybe its because its a ginger cat and not a gray. LOL. But seriously I fell like I need to still work on it that is why it took me so long to post it.

Gin Gin is one of the outside cats and only surviving kitten of momma Socks. Socks showed up when we moved here she was wild and we were finally able to catch her when she got hit and as Ramona says we work for our pets. She had to have her leg operated on and Gin Gin was young enough that we could get her and both are now fixed. They bring us presents on the back steps for feeding them. Mice, moles and sometimes a bird. We had to move our feeder as Gin Gin is a great hunter.

Cat in the basket

This is my first commission painting. A woman I worked with wanted a painting using some items she had from her mother which was a basket and milk can. At the time she had a black cat and asked if I could also put one in the picture. I think the size is 16x20 as that is the size of most of my work or 20x24.

Now remember all the old paintings I'm showing were done back in the mid 1980's and then I quit and did not start any painting again till 2007.

I hope I am a little better now.

Lash on the couch 16x20

Ok I thought I was going to melt when I was having hot flashes. This heat, 100+ with humidity is really bad. Look I sleep with the window cracked at 32 degrees and I am a happy camper. Hubby is over there shivering but he can just throw on another cat and he has his side of the electric blanket cranked up, I have my fan. With that said I'm really longing for winter right now can you tell.

Well I usually let the cats out on the front porch when I paint as they can get a little to curious and I have to go around the house and wipe paw prints off the floor. I use oil paint and that is not easy to get off them. Soooooooo I have not been busy with painting.

I do have a few new things I am working on but I don't want to show as I think it belongs in the burn pile. Do any of you have a burn pile? Work that you do but would not want any one to see? At this rate come fall I have enough for a bonfire.

So I thought I would post some of my older work in oils till it get s little cooler and I can let the cats outside on the porch.

This is a painting of Lash when he was a kitten, his eyes had not turned to the real emerald green and were a yellow green. He liked to lay on the back of my couch and look out the window and the quild is one that my mom made. It was nice to curl up in on a cold winter afternoon.

(If I talk about cold enough it may cool me off)

Cats in pen and ink triptych

Well it has been so icky here I have not done any painting that are any good to post. So I thought I would post one of my older pen and inks. this was a three panel or triptych. The middle one is my favorite. I did these when i was in school and the project was to have them connect in some way and only one spot of color. I put a box with a close up of cat eyes. the first being blue the second green and the third yellow. These are large about 10 x 13 each. If you click on the picture of each one you will see tons of little dots running between the last two. It took forever to put them in. And you see the cats going into the next frame, I called it Jumping into Reality.

Hand painted Christmas tree ornament of a cat

Here is first for me a Christmas tree ornament. The VAA was asked by Mr. David who has the Martha Vick House in Vicksburg. He has a cat called Orangie Louise and wanted to have a Christmas tree for her with ornaments with her on them. I was afraid It would never be done after being very careful with the glass ball I was given I was getting ready to photograph it when disaster hit. I dropped it and it shattered to pieces. I tried to paint on two of the balls I had from home and they were much thinner ant two broke in my hand. Hubby saved the day, went to the store, and found some plastic ones and I was able to do it all over a gain. Therefore, here is my second one that did make it to the blog. It was kind of fun.

Tried a Cheetah in watercolor and could not get the effect I was after. This was on cold press and not the hot press paper. I really need to get back to the zoo now that it is getting cooler so I can get some pictures. The New Orleans Zoo was just great but I have not been since Katrina hit.

I’m trying to do a painting a day in the watercolor lately but I get side tracked sometimes. I have to give it to the group of artist that is committed to this and actually get it done. Here is one of my cats Snuffle.

In Memory of Momma Tabby

I feel so bad, as most people know we rescue cats. We took in Momma Tabby when she showed up in Feb. pregnant .We later found out she was one of three cats left behind from someone who moved off and left them (This makes me so MAD). She was a young cat and this was most likely her first litter. In March, we were able to bring her in the house and set a separate room up for her to have the kittens in, as it is cold out side. We had six kittens born on March 17, we have found homes for most of them, and we have the males. Around four weeks ago, we had her spaded and all her shots and have been slowly letting her outside to get used to momma Socks and Ginger Snap who we took in last year and had spaded. It was 9 o’clock Thursday morning and I thought it was still cool out back that I would let her stay out a little longer I had been bringing her in around 12. At 9:30, I heard a dog yelp and ran out the front to see two German Shepard mixes running from behind the house. I went to check on the cats, as they are good to stay in the back yard. In addition, Socks and Ginger were ok but I did not see Momma Tabby right away. As I got to the back door, I saw her climb down from a tree and run to the house she was limping and went straight under the house. I tried all day to get her to come out but no go. When Hubby got home why tried putting the kittens in the carrier to lure her out. We could not find her under the house. Friday morning he crawled under the house and was able to bring her out she did not look good and we rusher her to our vet. Her back leg was swollen and she appeared to not have any feeling and was dehydrated. We left her, as they wanted to keep her and said it most likely would be Monday before she could come home. We went to get some things since we were in town. Just before we returned, we called to see if they knew what the damage was and we were told she had just died. What can I say we knew we were taking a risk letting her stay outside but we did not think it would be from a dog that is not on a leash and coming into our yard that does not have a collar so most likely no shots and of course not neutered.
When I was in school and took a speech course I had to give what was called a persuasive speech . I choose having your Pet spaded or neutered. Here is some of it.
A. Pet overpopulation is growing as we have seen with the pets abandoned after hurricane Katrina. A female dog and her offspring can produce 192 puppies in only 5 years.
B. A cat can have babies as early as 4 ½ months of age. She can have kittens every 3 months and the average size of a litter is 6. This shows how one cat can produce close to 80 millions cats in 10 years. .
C. Animal shelter facts according to American Humane Association. there are more than 30 million puppies and kittens born in the US each year. Only one in 10 finds a permanent home. The rest die of cruelty, starvation, disease, poisoning, or accidents or they end up in a shelter. Only 35% of shelter animals are adopted. Last year (2006) 6 to 8 million dogs and cats were euthanized or humanely killed.
II. The primary causes of pets ending up in shelters is that people fail to have their pets spayed or neutered, they are either abandon or give up because of lack of commitment to train the pet.
A. Advantages of spaying or neutering your pet is they live longer focusing more of their attention on the caregiver.
B. The behavior of you pet is better . They become less territorial and likely to roam. A fixed pet is less likely to bite or run away from home. By staying home they are less likely to catch diseases transmitted by fighting. They are less likely to mark furniture and rugs and drive you crazy at night with all the howling going on.
C. Some health problems like tumors, breast, ovarian, and testicular cancers, uterine infections are much lower.

Please Spay and Neuter you animals. It does not make you less of a man. This for all you crazy males who think it is unmanley not to have their male dog or cat fixed. So Stupid.

I really like the big cats and I did a larger one a long time ago in oil but I think this looks more like a Cheetah the other one looked more like a leopard's body.

New home for Minnie Mouse and Daisy

Today was a great day! I found a great home for my two girls. I could not have asked for a better home. The family took two of the kittens together and they will be inside cats. I know so many people think they need to go outside where we live and in the country there are coyotes. Not to mention cars. So thank you Todd and if you have any questions on the babies just let me know.

I had sooo much fun Sunday!!!!!

I had so much fun yesterday. I was in at the Bottling Company in Historic Downtown Hattiesburg. Sunday was the first Quick Draw auction and silent auction with the South Mississippi Art Association and the AIDS service Coalition benefit to raise funds. Each artist was allowed to put in 5 pieces for a silent auction. We had one hour to draw, paint or whatever type of art the artist chooses to perform. After the hour, we had 15 min to frame our piece and bring it to the stage give, our name and a brief description of our piece and then a real auctioneer started the bidding. The biggest thing is worrying if anyone would bid on it. I had some bids and it sold to a nice man for his wife who has a cat that looked like the one I painted. I also had three of my five paintings in the silent auction sell. YEA. I was able to meet some nice people and I would have loved to watch them work, as there were some great looking work put up for auction.

Lash

Yesterday was a sad and happy day all in one. Sad that I lost my cat of around 19 to 20 years old and happy that he now is in a better place able to see and chase butterflies and lizards. I believe in heaven and that all my animals will be there in the prime of their life. (And believe me it will be a lot) It is never easy to make the decision to have your furry friend helped to the other side but it is also hard to see them in such confusion. Lash must have had a stroke around Christmas as he could not move his right side very well and would just fall over. He lost his sight some time ago but no one would have ever known as he got around so well. He stared to quit eating and that was our clue that it was time to let him go. Lash was and is the only cat I have ever bought. He was a registered Russian Blue. For those not familiar with the bread it is an old one with a gray coat and each hair tipped with white. The eyes are the most gorgeous green that does not really show until around three years of age. They are very quite and not running all over the place, at least mine was very reserved. He did like to be up very high all over the house and would love to just sit and ride on your shoulder. Goodbye for now my sweet Alashaka. This is a picture of him on a ladder around 2 years of age.
